Problems for Mercedes as both Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas spin at start of Practice Two in Malaysia

Practice Two at the Malaysia GP played host to an uncharacteristic mistake and spin from Lewis Hamilton.

Fifth in the session and unable to unleash the full potential of his Mercedes W08, Hamilton slid off-track after clipping the kerb at Turn Seven on a hot lap.

"It's been a very difficult day," said Hamilton. "I've been struggling with the car. We have to try to understand where we have gone wrong with the balance."

Hamilton's spin came just after team-mate Valtteri Bottas' similar escapade and though the 2017 championship leader's error had Toto Wolff looking worried in the Mercedes garage, he wasn't beached in the trackside gravel.

"It was a long lurid slide, but he had his brain in gear and was able to find a gear and get out there," said Sky F1's Martin Brundle.

But while he was able to recover his car, repairs were needed to enable Hamilton to get out in the session again. And the Briton was well off the pace set by title rival Sebastian Vettel, lapping 1.4seconds down on his benchmark.
