Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso were both forced into early retirements after being caught up in a melee at Turn One at the Austrian GP.

Alonso's storming getaway from 13th saw him close in on the slow-starting Red Bull as Verstappen quickly dropped back from fifth, but both drivers were soon in the gravel after Daniil Kvyat caused a collision.

Kvyat had just passed his Toro Rosso team-mate Carlos Sainz off the start but didn't brake early enough into Turn One and slammed into the back of Alonso's McLaren, which in turn span into Verstappen.

The damage sustained was too great on both cars, and Alonso and Verstappen were out.

Kvyat, meanwhile, who has a history of first-lap crashes, was able to continue but had to serve a drive-through penalty for his role in the crash.

As for Verstappen, the race retirement was his fifth in seven races in a hugely frustrating period for the Dutch teenager.

"He's just having all the bad luck at the moment," said Red Bull team principal Christian Horner, who confirmed Verstappen's poor start was due to an anti-stall issue. "It will turn."
