Daniil Kvyat has been dropped and replaced by Max Verstappen at Red Bull following this error at his home Russian Grand Prix.
Kvyat twice shunted into the rear of Sebastian Vettel, who he also clashed with on the first lap in China, with the Ferrari eventually retired after crashing into the wall.
The German launched an expletive-laden outburst over team radio following the collision and then confronted Red Bull chief Christian Horner on the pitwall.
Horner, who has labelled Verstappen an "outstanding young talent" upon the team's confirmation that the teenager will partner Daniel Ricciardo for the remainder of the 2016 season, could only apologise to his former driver.
Ferrari boss Maurizo Arrivabene labelled Kvyat's actions in Sochi "unacceptable".
While Kvyat pleaded his innocence in Shanghai after enraging Vettel with an aggressive move into the first corner, he was adjudged to have been at fault on this occasion with the Russian driver handed a drive-through penalty by the stewards and three penalty points.
"It is easy now to attack me and I guess everyone will, but I don't really care about that," said Kvyat.
"The second touch he slowed down a lot and I didn't have time to react. I apologise to everyone that is involved. I think we have to speak, we have to talk."
It now seems he has paid the price for that mistake, and will line up for Red Bull's junior team Toro Rosso from the Spanish GP.
