Michael Schumacher family mark anniversary of charity campaign

Michael Schumacher's family have marked the one-year anniversary of the 'Keep Fighting' charity initiative created in the stricken F1 legend's honour.

Schumacher's teenage son Mick, who races in Formula 3, thanked fans and well-wishers in a message on social media, with the 18-year-old a trustee of the foundation alongside his father's former Ferrari colleagues Ross Brawn and Jean Todt.

The initiative is based on Schumacher's racing belief of 'never giving up' with the ambition of proving a 'force for good in the world in achieving cultural and social benefits'.

A charity football match, featuring F1 drivers and other sports stars, has been held in Germany in each of the last two years, while an exhibition about Schumacher's record-breaking career will open in 2018.

It is nearly four years since Schumacher suffered severe head injuries in a skiing accident while on a Christmas family holiday in the French Alps.

Little is known about the 48-year-old's condition and recovery, with official updates from the family scarce since Schumacher returned home to Switzerland to continue receiving treatment in September 2014.

The family have repeatedly stressed his recovery is a private matter.

2017 world champion Lewis Hamilton, who this year broke the German's F1 pole position record which had stood for 11 years, paid his own tribute to Schumacher on Twitter over the weekend and said his thoughts continued to be with the family.

As F1's most successful-ever driver with seven titles and 91 wins, Schumacher was one of 33 world champions inducted into the FIA's new Hall of Fame earlier this month

Sabine Kehm, Schumacher's long-time manager, represented the German's family at the event and said: "We all know Michael should be here and I am totally sure he would love to be here.

"He always had the highest respect for everyone in this room and he would be very honoured. What made Michael so special, what made him so successful was, as with everybody in this room, a love and passion for this sport."
