Michael van Gerwen believes he is in the best spell of his darts career as he prepares for the World Darts Championship in December

Michael van Gerwen has sent out a warning to his fellow professionals, claiming he is in the best form of his career as he prepares for the World Darts Championship next month.

The Dutchman stormed to the second Players Championship title of his career on Sunday, adding to his European Championship, Grand Slam of Darts and World Series of Darts crowns won in November.

Van Gerwen, 26, has now won 18 PDC events this year, including The Masters, UK Open and World Matchplay, but is determined to add to his 2014 Alexandra Palace title.

"I think I'm playing better than I've ever done in my life," Van Gerwen told Sky Sports News HQ. "The hard work is paying off and I'm really glad to be in this form. I hope to take it into the World Championship - that's going to be the main one of course.

The world No 1, who was beaten by eventual winner Gary Anderson in last year's semi-finals, has drawn the winner of the preliminary round tie between Thailand's Thanawat Gaweenuntawong and Germany's Rene Eidams.

"I don't know anything about them," he said. "That could also be a very dangerous thing because you don't know how they're playing.

"I need to make sure that I'm 200 per cent focused and make sure that I'm going to play really well in that game.

"If I could choose, I would swap all the other tournaments I won for this one. It's the most important one and I'm going to try and get my title back but the standard is so high you're not allowed to make any mistakes."
