Adam Yates stayed second overall in the Volta a Catalunya as Max Schachmann snatched victory from the breakaway on stage five.
The 188km (116 mile) stage from Puigcerda to Sant Cugat del Valles was expected to be one for the sprinters but Bora-Hansgrohe's Schachmann, part of a four-man breakaway, went clear of the rest inside the final 11 kilometres (6.8 miles) and hung on to win by 13 seconds from the main bunch.
Mitchelton-Scott's Adam Yates sits 14 seconds being Astana's Miguel Lopez, who crossed the line 10th on the day.
Team Sky's Egan Bernal suffered a mechanical problem inside the final 200 metres of the stage and walked over the line carrying his bike, but the Colombian did not lose any time as the problem occurred inside the final three kilometres (1.8 miles).
He sits third overall, 17 seconds down, while Nairo Quintana of Movistar is 25 seconds behind, 21 seconds ahead of Irishman Dan Martin of UAE Team Emirates in fifth place.
Simon Yates, also of Mitchelton-Scott, is 10th overall, with a deficit of two minutes 39 seconds.
