Chris Froome continued his march towards Vuelta a Espana victory with a convincing win in the Stage 16 time trial.

Froome extended his lead over second-placed Vincenzo Nibali by 57 seconds as he completed the 40.2km-course in 47 minutes.

The Team Sky rider, bidding to become the first man in 39 years to win the Vuelta and the Tour de France in the same year, is now one minute, 58 seconds clear of Nibali with five stages remaining.

"I wasn't getting many time checks from the car so didn't really know where I was," Froome said. "I actually thought it wasn't good news so I was worried halfway through.

"But coming into the last six or seven kilometres I found out I was on track for the stage, which was a big relief."

Sky boss Dave Brailsford warned against complacency, saying: "It's so hard, the climbs are so steep and intense that you can never relax. We can tick that one off, turn the page and get back into the steep hills."
