Team Sky's Sergio Henao has been cleared to return to racing after an investigation into his biological passport.

The Colombian was withdrawn from competition by Team Sky in April after a request from the Athlete Passport Management Unit for further information about his blood values.

However, a statement from the International Cycling Union (UCI) released on Tuesday read: "After examination, the independent experts came to the conclusion that there was no basis to proceed further."

Henao, who spends much of the off-season training at altitude, was forced to miss three months during a similar investigation in 2014.

The 28-year-old revealed he was "beyond disappointed" at having to spend a second spell on the sidelines, which saw him withdrawn from the squad for the Belgian classic La Fleche Wallonne, a race he was among the favourites for.

Team principal Sir Dave Brailsford said: "We are pleased but not surprised by this outcome. We have always believed in Sergio and he has always had our full support. This decision obviously means he can now get back to racing and I am sure he will be ready to make a big contribution to the team during the rest of the season.

"What this process has highlighted is the gap in research regarding the physiology of athletes like Sergio, who are born and raised at altitude and who continue to spend prolonged periods of time living at altitude.

"This is something I am sure that the anti-doping authorities will want to look at further in the interests of clean competition, but also in the interests of others like Sergio."

Henao added: "I am happy that this is finally over. It's been a difficult period for me but I know I have done nothing wrong, so I was confident that the UCI would come to this decision. I am looking forward to getting back on the team and racing."

Henao now has just over a month to force his way into Team Sky's plans for the Tour de France, with Chris Froome starting the defence of his title on July 2.

He had showed plenty of good form before being pulled from racing, finishing third overall in the Tour Down Under and second in the Tour of the Basque Country.
