The Giro d'Italia will start in Hungary in 2020 with the prologue taking place in Budapest, followed by two further stages on Hungarian soil.

Race organisers made the announcement at the Italian Cultural Institute in Budapest.

"We are officially announcing this big start in 2020 from Hungary, and above all from Budapest, a very beautiful city that in the last years has become a tourist destination for many Italians," said race director Mauro Vegni.

"But surely through the other two stages that will take place in Hungary, we will show the world other beautiful cities but above all truly important and beautiful territories and landscapes.

"It is a great opportunity for us, at the Giro d'Italia, to be able to start off from a special territory, from a special country, from a country with close ties to Italy, like Hungary.

It will be the Grand Tour's 14th start outside of Italy, with the most recent being in Israel last year.

"In 2020 we will have three stages. At this point, we will announce the route of these three stages in a press conference at a later date. We announce only that we have reached an agreement." Vegni added.
