Quick-Step's Yves Lampaert took the Vuelta A Espana red jersey on Sunday with victory on stage two.

The Belgian attacked inside the final kilometre of the 203.4km run from Nimes to Gruissan, holding on for his first stage win in a Grand Tour and the accompanying 10-second bonus.

That was enough for a one-second overall lead on team-mate Matteo Trentin, with race favourite Chris Froome 21 seconds back in ninth after a 16th-placed finish.

Froome looked on course for more as Team Sky led the peloton six kilometres from home, but they were pegged back by Astana and Quick-Step before Lampaert's decisive burst on a roundabout.

"At the moment I don't know what's happening, it's really crazy for me," the leader said afterwards.

"During the race we planned that if we could make an echelon, we would try in the last 10 kms. We went full out from the last three kilometres, then we were away with [team-mate Julian] Alaphilippe and a few guys in the break.

"After that, just before the roundabout, they shouted at me: 'Go, go, go!' I knew I could ride one kilometre very fast and it worked out."
