Sir Dave Brailsford joked that Chris Froome should enter the Paris Marathon after the Tour de France leader was forced to run up Mont Ventoux on stage 12.

Froome, Richie Porte and Bauke Mollema all crashed into the back of a race motorbike that had stopped to avoid crowds on the road with 1km remaining.

While Mollema and Porte were able to continue riding, Froome's bike was broken and he subsequently began running up the climb as he waited for a replacement.

Initial results saw him lose the overall race lead to Adam Yates, but they were later revised and Froome instead extended his advantage at the top of the general classification to 47 seconds.

Team Sky principal Brailsford said: "I think each time at Mont Ventoux there is a surprise. It was not planned. It was an accident. I think the jury and everyone on the organisation has played the fair play card. It's right; it's correct.

"I think we need a bit of calm. Chris, Richie and Mollema were the best riders and they keep the gap they had with 1km to go.

"Perhaps next year Chris will do the Paris Marathon."

Yates managed to work his way safely through the crash scene and afterwards spoke out in support of the Tour crowds.

He said: "It was pretty dangerous in the last kilometre, but the fans make the sport and there's not many sports where fans can get so close to the athletes. It is what it is."
