Chris Froome is expecting a fightback from Alberto Contador after replacing the Spaniard as leader of the Criterium du Dauphine by winning stage five.
Contador was dropped when Froome attacked 2.6km from the summit finish in Vaujony and finished 21 seconds down on the Briton in fifth place on the day.
Froome now leads the race by seven seconds from Richie Porte, while Contador's poor performance relegated him to 27 seconds adrift in third.
Froome, however, believes Contador will still be a danger on the race's two remaining stages, both of which have summit finishes.
He said: "I didn't expect to gain time on Alberto Contador on such a short climb, but I know from past experiences that he never gives up.
"We'll see what he's got tomorrow. There's still a hard stage to come tomorrow, so I haven't won the Dauphine yet."
Froome's victory was his fourth of the season and places him firmly on course to win the Dauphine for the third time in four years.
His performance was also an ominous show of strength ahead of the Tour de France, which starts on July 2.
Froome added: "It's an amazing feeling. It's always good to win a race before the Tour de France. The team rode very well day to take me to the final climb in the best position. They set it up perfectly for me."
