Chris Froome was denied a time gain on Criterium du Dauphine leader Alberto Contador on a hilly second stage won by Spain’s Jesus Herrada.

Froome (Team Sky) finished eighth in an uphill sprint to the line in Chalmazel-Jeansagniere, two seconds behind Herrada (Movistar) but about six seconds ahead of Contador (Tinkoff), who was 23rd.

The official race results first stated that Froome had gained four seconds on Contador, but they were later revised to give both riders the same finishing time.

Richie Porte (BMC Racing), who is second overall, finished about three seconds down on Froome, but he too was awarded the same time as the Briton.

The result means Contador remains six seconds ahead of Porte and 13 seconds in front of Froome in the general classification with five stages to go.

Froome said: "In the last few hundred meters I felt good, so I pushed on and got a top 10. I've had good feelings so far and there's still a lot of racing to come this week. From the prologue and from today, I've got a good feeling about it."

Contador added: "It's been a quick day; very quick till the last moment. Today it was all about positioning. I don't have the speed in the legs yet, but it's been a good day of training in that perspective.

"We have the yellow jersey but we don't mind losing it now, especially if we get it back on the last day. It was more about maintaining the rhythm of the race and passing one more day without any problem."

Herrada, meanwhile, attacked out of the peloton with 300m remaining, overtook the last three members of the day's breakaway and pulled away to win by two seconds.

He said: "I tried to keep as much strength as I could for the finale. I knew how it would be at the end so I didn't want to waste any energy to be at 100 per cent for the sprint. I'm very happy. The finale suited me well."

The eight-day Dauphine is a key warm-up race for July's Tour de France and continues on Wednesday with a rolling 182km third stage from Boen-sur-Lignon to Tournon-sur-Rhone. Find out more about the route in our race guide.
