Germany's Roger Kluge scuppered the sprinters by winning a flat 17th stage of the Giro d’Italia with a late attack as Steven Kruijswijk retained the overall lead.

Just a day after his IAM Cycling team announced they would fold at the end of the year, Kluge handed the Swiss squad their first grand tour stage victory by surging out of the peloton with just under 1km to go and hanging on to win by handful of metres.

Giacomo Nizzolo (Trek-Segafredo) beat Nikias Arndt (Giant-Alpecin) in the sprint for second place.

Kruijswijk (LottoNL-Jumbo) followed in the main bunch in 30th place to preserve his three-minute lead over second-placed Esteban Chaves (Orica-GreenEdge) in the general classification.

Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) remains 3min 23sec back in third.

The Giro continues on Thursday with the longest day of this year's race, a 244km 18th stage from Muggio to Pinerolo. Find out more about the route in our race guide.
