Luxembourg's Bob Jungels took the overall lead of the Giro d'Italia as breakaway rider Giulio Ciccone won stage 10 solo.

Ciccone (Bardiani-CSF) formed part of a 13-man escape group but moved into a lone lead on the descent from the penultimate climb of the day and won by 42 seconds in Sestola from runner-up Ivan Rovny (Tinkoff).

Jungels (Etixx - Quick-Step) finished in a vastly reduced peloton 2min 15sec later and now moves from second place to the top of the general classification after previous leader and team-mate Gianluca Brambilla was dropped on the final climb.

All of the favourites for overall victory also finished in the main bunch, although a late split saw Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) cross the line four seconds ahead of Vincenzo Nibali (Astana).

The only big-name absentee was Mikel Landa (Team Sky), who abandoned the race with just under 150km remaining due to illness.

It means Jungels leads second-placed Andrey Amador (Movistar) by 26 seconds overall, with Valverde climbing to 50 seconds down in third.

Nibali is two seconds further back in fifth.

The Giro continues on Wednesday with a mostly flat 227km 11th stage from Modena to Asolo.
