Nairo Quintana completed overall victory of the Tour de Romandie as Michael Albasini won the fifth and final stage in Geneva.
Albasini (Orica-GreenEdge) formed part of the day's 10-man breakaway - which also featured a rare appearance from Chris Froome (Team Sky) - and then sprinted to victory ahead of Andrey Amador (Movistar) and Wilco Kelderman (LottoNL-Jumbo) after they had narrowly avoided being caught.
Froome caused a surprise by joining the breakaway a day after winning stage four, but he was dropped when Albasini, Amador, Kelderman and Carlos Verona (Etixx - Quick-Step) attacked with 16km to go and he eventually finished 3min 36sec down in 105th.
The peloton was broken up by a crash in the final few hundred metres, but Quintana (Movistar) stayed safe to seal his second victory in a stage race of the season.
Thibaut Pinot (FDJ.fr) ended the race second overall, 19 seconds down, while Ion Izagirre (Movistar) finished 23 seconds back in third.
Froome said: "We weren't sure if it was going to be a sprint or not today, so we thought it would be a good idea to have someone in the breakaway. The legs felt all right this morning so I thought, 'I'll give it a go and see what happens'."
Froome finished the race 21min 12sec down in 38th, with much of the damage having been done on stage two, but he rescued his week with his win on stage four.
He added: "It has been a good week of racing for us and I'm happy. I hope my racing here will move my preparations forward for the Tour de France.
"I'm looking forward to a good break at home now and going on to another training camp. I think I'm in a good place right now and I'm looking forward to the months ahead."
