Sir Bradley Wiggins pulled out of the Tour de Yorkshire as Dylan Groenewegen took the overall lead by sprinting to victory on stage one in Settle.
On a day played out in cold, wet and windy conditions, Wiggins was dropped by the peloton with about 60km of the 184km stage remaining and then abandoned with just under 30km to go.
He later wrote on Instagram: "Great atmosphere in Yorkshire today. It was a tough day's racing so thanks to everyone who braved the weather and came out. The boys and I really appreciate it. I'm gutted not to join you into the weekend but Rio needs to take priority."
The opening stage ended in the predicted bunch finish and Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo) claimed his third win of the season by beating Caleb Ewan (Orica-GreenEdge) into second place and Nikias Arndt (Giant-Alpecin) into third.
Ten, six and fur bonus seconds were awarded to the first three finishers, meaning Groenewegen moves to the top of the general classification and opens up leads of four seconds over Ewan and six seconds over Arndt.
Britain's Steve Cummings (Dimension Data) almost thwarted the sprinters by launching a solo attack with 4.5km to go, but he was caught with just over 1km left.
The three-day race, which is being held for the second time, continues on Saturday with a 135.5km second stage from Otley to Doncaster.
