South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn has been ruled out of the five-match one-day international series against England.

Steyn has not played since hurting his shoulder during the first Test against England in Durban, missing the final three matches of the series, which the tourists won 2-1.

The 32-year-old is still battling to overcome the problem and scans have revealed a "bone stress reaction", although team officials are hopeful he will be able to play in the two Twenty20 internationals which follow the five ODIs.

Proteas team manager and doctor Mohammed Moosajee said: "He is undergoing therapy and oxygen chamber treatment."

Fellow paceman Vernon Philander has not recovered from the ankle injury he suffered during the tour of India in November and will not feature in the ODI squad, although he has started bowling in the nets.
