AB de Villiers admitted that South Africa were second best as England clinched the Test series with a seven-wicket win in Johannesburg.
Although England's first innings lead was only 10, the hosts were bowled out for just 83 in their second knock, allowing Alastair Cook's team to secure a resounding victory with more than two days to spare. England now lead the series 2-0 with the final Test in Centurion starting on Friday.
Stuart Broad took 6-17 on Saturday afternoon and de Villiers said: "We just got a good hammering from the opposition. It's the only way to put it.
"It's never nice to lose a series but I'm the kind of guy to get myself going for that last Test match and get the team going too.
"It's difficult to explain but these things happen. You have to give credit to England's bowlers and their team."
They're definitely not the number five team in the world, they're much better than that.
De Villiers also paid tribute to England's young team, insisting they are better than their Test ranking suggests.
"They're a good team, well balanced and with lots of players who offer a lot to their captain.
"They're definitely not the number five team in the world, they're much better than that. They've got a bright future and lots of young players with lots of talent.
"It looks like they've got a lot of maturity as well, even though they're young. They are a difficult team to play against."
