South Africa wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock has been ruled out of the third Test in Johannesburg with a knee injury.

Dane Vilas was  summoned from a Sunfoil Series match in Port Elizabeth to replace him, and the hosts made one other change with fast bowler Hardus Viljoen replacing spinner Dane Piedt, with the pitch suiting the quicks.

England opener Alex Hales - who had been suffering with a stomach bug - was passed fit to play and the tourists, 1-0 up in the series, are unchanged from the drawn second Test.

South Africa won the toss and chose to bat - had they fielded first AB de Villiers, in his first match as captain, would have stood in behind the stumps until Vilas arrived.

Cape Cobras star Vilas arrives at The Wanderers in superb form, having scored a career-best 216 not out in last week's match with the Lions in Paarl.

The 30-year-old has played five Tests, the last against India before Christmas. He has found Test cricket tough going so far, scoring 60 runs in his seven innings at an average of 8.57, with a top score of 15. Outside of Tests he averages just over 40 in domestic first-class cricket.
