Luke Ronchi was delighted with his first day as a Test cricketer despite narrowly missing out on a century at Headingley.
Wicket-keeper Ronchi was called into the New Zealand side after BJ Watling injured his knee at Lord's, Watling only playing in the second Investec Test against England as a specialist batsman.
New Zealand were in trouble on 144-5 when Ronchi came to the crease, but he showed few nerves and played aggressively to keep the scoreboard ticking over quickly alongside Tom Latham.
He had reached 88 off only 70 balls when his innings came to a somewhat disappointing end, but despite failing to reach three figures Ronchi was in positive mood after play finished with New Zealand on 297-8.
"It was a good day. To make 300 on day one in 65 overs is a pretty good effort, especially after being 2-2," Ronchi said.
"We were pushing the game along at a good run-rate. People were just doing their natural thing.
"I've had a decent first day. I've dreamed of playing Test cricket for as long as I've known the game. It's late in my career but it's still pretty cool.
"I wanted to make sure I didn't go out there and not play naturally; it'd be an injustice in my mind.
"I wouldn't play the innings any differently. I can't complain; I got 88 and am more than happy with that."
