Australia's captain elect Steve Smith completed his 11th Test ton as Australia scored 481 before England collapsed to 107-8 on day two at the Oval.
Smith was initially caught behind on 92 only for Steven Finn to be denied his 100th Test wicket by a no-ball - the seamer over-stepping by a distance - and made the most of the reprieve to reach three figures.
Moeen Ali grabbed a quick brace of wickets before lunch only for Smith and Mitchell Starc to share a record eighth-wicket partnership for Australia in Tests at the Oval.
Smith eventually fell for 143 when he dragged Finn (3-90) on, while Starc was dismissed lbw for an entertaining 58 off 52 balls - falling to Stokes (3-133) on review.
Alastair Cook was bowled by a beauty from Nathan Lyon (2-32) with the last ball before the tea interval, and then watched on as his England side suffered an embarrassing collapse in the evening session.
Adam Lyth's struggles with the bat continued, top-edging a pull shot off the returning Peter Siddle (2-18) to mid-on, before Ian Bell and Joe Root hung around for a brief spell together.
But when Bell was bowled by a beauty from Siddle, it was the first of six England wickets to fall for just 32 runs.
Mitchell Marsh took 3-18 but could have had even better figures when he was denied the wicket of Mark Wood late on to another no-ball.
