Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft were greeted with loud boos from the crowd in South Africa after admitting they tried to tamper with the ball

Australia's Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft received a hostile reception from South African supporters, following their admission they tried to tamper with the ball during the third Test.

Footage emerged of Australia opener Bancroft using a foreign object on the ball and then hiding it down his trousers - an action that has seen him charged by match officials.

Smith later admitted Bancroft had been instructed to tamper with the ball by the team's "senior leadership" group.

Smith stood down from his role as captain for the Cape Town match and was later handed a one-Test ban by the ICC, as well as being fined 100 per cent of his match fee. Bancroft has been given a 75 per cent fine and three demerit points.

Both Bancroft and Smith were subjected to loud booing after being dismissed for 26 and seven, respectively, as Australia collapsed to 107 all out to give South Africa victory by 322 runs and hand them a 2-1 lead in the four-match series.
