Andrew Strauss believes that Adam Lyth's future as an England opener is in the balance after a disappointing Ashes series

Andrew Strauss believes England have the players to become the No 1 Test side in the world again.

Alastair Cook's side regained the Ashes 3-2 on Sunday despite losing the final Test against Australia at The Oval by an innings and 46 runs.

And Strauss, who was skipper when England were top of the rankings, believes if they improve their consistency they have the talent to improve on their current position of third.

The ECB's director of cricket told Sky Sports News HQ: "We are inconsistent. At one stage, we were the world's least consistent side ever.

"We need to improve on that, you can't have sustained success without being able to back up a number of wins in a row.

"The great thing is we've got players capable of winning and more confidence is breeding its way through the group.

"In terms of raw attributes and the squad we have there is a lot of upside, we haven't seen the best of this side yet."

We pick out the best action from a remarkable Ashes series, which England won 3-2

England have tough series ahead against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates in October followed by a tour of South Africa in December.

Opener Adam Lyth's place on the tours is in doubt after a disappointing Ashes series where he scored just 115 runs in five Tests.

And Strauss said he hopes the batsman learns from his mistakes against the Aussies.

He added: "Adam hasn't had as a productive series as he would have liked.

"I think he would have learnt a huge amount coming up against one of the best bowling attacks in the world.

"Opening the batting isn't easy, hopefully he will have a think at the end of the series, what he could have done differently."
