England have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during the fifth Investec Ashes Test against Australia at The Oval.

Captain Alastair Cook has been fined 40 per cent of his match fee and the rest of the players 20 per cent of their match fees after England were ruled to be two overs short of their target when time allowances were taken into consideration.

The news came as a surprise to at least one England player with Stuart Broad admitting on Twitter that he only found out when the news broke on Sky Sports News HQ.

"This really is breaking news. I had no idea!" he wrote.

The punishments were imposed by match referee Jeff Crowe following England's defeat by an innings and 46 runs in the final match of the series, which the hosts won 3-2.

There was no formal hearing after Cook pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction.
