Chris Woakes admits England need to put in better performances as they prepare for the Boxing Day Ashes Test with the hosts holding an unassailable 3-0 lead.

Chris Woakes says England will need to show "pride" as the tourists prepare for the fourth Ashes Test in Melbourne.

England have already lost the five-match series after defeats in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth and will need to avoid defeat at the MCG or in the fifth Test in Sydney to prevent a second successive series whitewash in Australia.

Woakes, who has played in all three of the Tests, acknowledged that England can "learn from Australia" who have made the most of their moments of dominance on home soil.

"We can learn from Australia and how they have taken (the chance) and made sure they did not let their foot off the throat," Woakes said.

"We need to make sure we do that (going forward) and take those chances. Hopefully, show some pride - I know we are 3-0 down but we obviously want to come away from this series 3-2.

"We know we are going to have to play better cricket but that is our plan if we can and put in some strong performances."

The all-rounder, who has taken seven wickets in the series, was the final wicket to fall in Perth as Australia regained the Ashes in convincing fashion and acknowledged England need to "put in better performances" with the Boxing Day Test match starting on Tuesday.

"We have obviously got ourselves into a couple of the Test matches but haven't been able to follow through and I suppose make those sessions completely ours and win days of cricket - which you have to do in Test cricket," said Woakes.

"We have to put in better performances - we realise that.

"We know we have put ourselves into positions where we probably could have taken the Test match with two hands and ram it home but we haven't been able to do that."

England's bowling unit will be without the injured Chris Overton for the Test at the MCG with Tom Curran, Mason Crane and Mark Wood in contention to replace the Somerset seam bowler.
