Craig Overton explains how he suffered the rib injury, which has made him a doubt for the fourth Ashes Test

Craig Overton has confirmed he is a doubt for the fourth Ashes Test in Melbourne due to the fractured rib he suffered while batting in the second Test

Overton was hit by a short ball during England's defeat in Adelaide, but was able to play in the third Test in Perth, which England lost on Monday to hand the Ashes back to Australia.

The 23-year-old took two wickets in Perth, but when asked if he would be able to play in the next Test, said: "We're not sure at the minute.

"We're going to be reassessing in the next couple of days and going from there. At the minute there's quite a lot of swelling around the ribs but it's seeing if that settles down quickly.

"Melbourne might be tough but there's still a chance for Sydney."

The bowler explained that his injury was not causing much concern in the build-up to the third Test, but that he aggravated it while bowling.

He said: "No scan prior to the game. There was a bit of bruising there but that was about it. Going for that caught and bowled off Usman Khawaja, landing on the same spot made it worse.

"Going for that bumper to Khawaja, it sort of just went then and that's when the pain really started hurting."

Overton's two Test matches for England have come in Adelaide and Perth, and the Somerset player reflected on his Ashes experience so far.

He said: "It's been good fun. Obviously it's a challenge. You're playing against probably the three best bowlers in the world and it's always going to be tough.

"It gives you a lot, taking wickets out here. These sort of wickets are probably suited to my bowling with getting the extra bounce.

"It's nice that I'm getting the wickets, but I'm still not getting too far ahead of myself. I've still got a lot of work to do."
