Joe Root is "humbled" to have been named as England's new Test captain and cannot wait to get started in the role.
Root's appointment was confirmed on Monday morning, with the Yorkshire all-rounder taking over from Alastair Cook, who stepped down earlier this month.
He had been Cook's vice-captain since May 2015 and will take charge for the first time, injury permitting, when England return to Test action against South Africa in July.
Before then, Root will spend time with England's 50-over side, captained by Eoin Morgan, with a one-day international trip to the West Indies being followed by two matches against Ireland and the ICC Champions Trophy on home soil.
"It is a huge honour to be given the England Test captaincy," said Root, whose first game is scheduled to be at Lord's.
"I feel privileged, humbled and very excited.
"We have a very good group of players and I'm looking forward to leading them out in the summer, building on Alastair's achievements and making the most of our talents in the years ahead.
"The senior guys in the changing room play a very influential role and whilst there's a natural progression for me it's a huge support to know that they are there to help and advise."
