England will hire Saqlain Mushtaq as a spinning consultant for the second Test against Pakistan at Old Trafford this summer, according to Sky sources.

The former Surrey star is likely to be asked to help England's batsman read Pakistan leg-spinner Yasir Shah, who had them all at seas during last November's Tests in the UAE.

Shah took 15 wickets in the series, with an economy rate of just 2.60.

Old Trafford is the most spin-friendly of England's Test strips, and Saqlain could also help England spinners Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid make the most of the surface.

Saqlain has previously helped New Zealand and the West Indies as a consultant.

Muhstaq took 208 wickets in 49 Tests from 1995 to 2004 and was regarded as a pioneer of the 'doosra', a ball bowled with a conventional off-break action that spins away rather than towards a right-handed batsman.

He also helped Surrey win several County Championship titles at the turn of the century.

England have been without a spin-bowling coach since Mushtaq Ahmed, another former Pakistan international, left his role in 2014.
