Ben Stokes is set to miss the rest of England's Investec Test series with Sri Lanka after suffering a knee injury in the innings and 88-run victory at Headingley.
The all-rounder, who had already been replaced by Chris Woakes in the England squad for the second Test at Durham, tweeted an update on his fitness on Monday evening ahead of undergoing surgery on Tuesday.
"Devastated to be missing the rest of the series, this has been a ongoing issue for 2/3 years which I've managed to play through until now," he said.
"All the best to the lads in the rest of the series, see you down at @DurhamCricket in the crowd."
"Ben Stokes has undergone surgery to address a cartilage tear in his left knee," read an ECB statement. "Full details on the length of his rehabilitation will be confirmed in due course."
The ECB have given no timescale on Stokes' comeback but he seems set to be out for up to six weeks, which would see him miss the final two Tests against Sri Lanka and the subsequent five-match one-day international series, starting on June 21.
Warwickshire all-rounder Woakes, who will battle Nottinghamshire seamer Jake Ball for a spot in the England XI at Emirates Riverside, celebrated his recall by taking a career-best 9-36 against Durham at Edgbaston.
The 27-year-old will be hunting a seventh Test cap, with his last appearance the fourth Test against South Africa in Centurion over the winter and his first coming against Australia at The Oval in August 2013.
England squad for second Test: Alastair Cook (C), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Jake Ball, Stuart Broad, Nick Compton, Steven Finn, Alex Hales, Joe Root, James Vince, Chris Woakes.
