James Vince hopes his England career will not be limited to white-ball cricket as he sets his sights on a Test call.
The Hampshire batsman has only played three games for his country, all of which came in the Twenty20 international series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates late last year.
Vince scored 125 runs at an average of just under 42 and that was enough for him to be named player of the series as England prevailed 3-0 in three exciting games.
The 24-year-old stayed on in the Middle East to captain the Lions and has since played for the Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League, but Vince is keen not to be pigeon-holed as a one-day specialist.
"I want to play all formats for England ideally," he said. "My way in has been through Twenty20, but I'd like to progress to the one-day and Test sides."
Vince did not consider himself ready for Indian Premier League exposure when he had the option of joining this month's annual auction, but in any case he will have other priorities at the start of next summer.
"I'm not sure my game's quite where it needs to be to be picked up in the IPL anyway," he added.
"But it's my first season as club captain of Hampshire so I want to go back there, score some runs and get their season off to a good start and try to push my case for the Test side."
Vince has joined up with the England squad ahead of a Twenty20 clash with South Africa A on Wednesday, their only match before two meetings with South Africa in the shortest format of the game.
Those matches will end England's tour, but they will not have much time to rest at home before heading out to India for the World Twenty20, which starts early next month.
Vince is not the only Hampshire player in the squad, with Liam Dawson having been handed a call-up after an impressive series of performances last season, and he is confident the all-rounder is up to international class.
"The more he bowled, the better he became, and in the Lions series against Pakistan he bowled really well," Vince added.
"So he's improving all the time. He can definitely make an impact. If he gets an opportunity he's good enough to take it.
"Obviously Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid are bowling very well and will get the first crack - but if conditions dictate and he gets a game, or one of those gets injured, I'm sure he'd do very well."
