David Lloyd says he expects Jimmy Anderson to return for the second Test against South Africa

England seamer James Anderson is on track to play in the second Test against South Africa in Cape Town.

Anderson was ruled out of the series-opening victory in Durban due to a calf strain but the tourists have been easing their record wicket-taker back into action over the course of the past week.

The 33-year-old bowled the equivalent of six overs in the middle under the watchful eye of bowling coach Ottis Gibson on Wednesday morning and got through without any concerns.

England skipper Alastair Cook told Sky Sports: "All the reports are good. He's had a tough week of bowling with lots and lots of rehab and hopefully he'll be fit for Cape Town."

Sky Sports expert Nasser Hussain added: "England wouldn't be talking Anderson up if there was any kind of doubt.

"In a four-man attack you probably wouldn't risk Anderson but in a five-man attack if you have the chance to bringing back your greatest-ever wicket taker, why not do it?"

Anderson has claimed 426 Test wickets and overtook previous record-holder Sir Ian Botham's tally of 383 during England's tour of the Caribbean earlier this year.
