Adam Lyth says England experience made him hungry for more

Adam Lyth admits his Ashes series was disappointing but is confident he will return to England duty a better player for it.

The opener managed just 115 runs in nine innings, at an average of 12.77, as England regained the Ashes in a 3-2 series win.

Those statistics led to criticism from Kevin Pietersen, who wrote on Twitter: "Lyth needs to be replaced for sure! Out of his depth! [Alex] Hales needs a gig!" before adding: "And I would have averaged more than 10 batting left-handed without pads!"

But Lyth is confident he will bounce back from the disappointment of his individual performances despite pressure coming from within the national side's ranks, with Moeen Ali hoping to be promoted to opener after an impressive scoring run down the order.

"This experience has made me hungrier, you don't become a bad player overnight and you don't in five games either," said Lyth.

"It's been an incredible few weeks and now I'm an Ashes winner, nobody can take that away from me!

Andrew Strauss believes Adam Lyth's future as an England opener is in the balance after a disappointing Ashes series.

"It could have gone better on a personal note but that's cricket and that can happen when you're facing one of the best attacks in the world on testing pitches.

"There's no getting away from the fact it's been a tough few games and a tough few weeks but I have to bounce back from it and I know I'll do that."

Lyth went into the Ashes series on the back of a superb 127 in the second Test against New Zealand but failed to recapture that form against the Australians.

The 27-year-old admits he does not think there was a consistent flaw in his game and feels he can improve to ensure his selection for the Pakistan series, which begins in the United Arab Emirates in October.

"I can't really put my low scores down to one thing," he said. "The Aussies have bowled well in testing conditions, I have copped some decent balls but I've played some bad shots which I'm disappointed about.

"I'm not one to point at excuses at all, I've been hitting the ball well all summer but I just haven't done it out in the middle in this Ashes series. I know I'm good enough at this level. I can do it, it's just about doing it consistently.

"I don't really pay attention to people talking about who will open in the UAE with Alastair Cook, it's completely out of my hands who the selectors pick.

"I know exactly what I have to do and that is score big runs for Yorkshire, it's as simple as that.

"It really does mean a hell of a lot that the captain, coach and selectors have stuck with me and hopefully they will continue to do that but I have to do my job which is scoring runs.

"I am 100 per cent behind my game and I back my ability so it would be nice if I could get a couple of hours at the crease soon to get back in the groove."
