Moeen Ali accepted England had a clumsy day in the field

England all-rounder Moeen Ali was left to rue missed chances after New Zealand took control of the first Test on day two at Lord's.

Debutant seamer Mark Wood thought he had his first Test wicket when he located Martin Guptill's edge, but replays showed he had overstepped the mark - and England also put down chances to help the Black Caps reach 303-2 in reply to 389.

Having taken England's first wicket of the day by trapping Tom Latham lbw, Moeen told Sky Sports after stumps: "I think it's definitely New Zealand's day. They bowled us out really quickly and then batted really well. We found it hard to take wickets.

"It was very clumsy (from us) because it's the type of wicket on which you have to take your chances. It would've been Woody's first wicket and it was a great catch but then we dropped a couple of chances. We were disappointed with that and we're going to have to be sharp tomorrow.

"I thought Jimmy (Anderson) bowled quite well and Broady (Stuart Broad) was maybe short on that pitch. New Zealand bowled really well and full and hopefully tomorrow we can bowl a bit fuller with the new ball.

"I knew I'd bowl a bit later on and I bowled pretty well today. I was pretty happy with the way it was coming out. In the West Indies I tried to force it a lot but now I have a better rhythm. I prefer to bowl from the Nursery End because the slope helps me.

"Every time I bowled a bit wider there was a bit more spin. I try not to bowl too slow and use natural variation, hitting an area and trying to find more consistency."

On being relegated to eighth in the batting order, Moeen was diplomatic, saying: "I don't mind with Stokesy (Ben Stokes) the way he's been playing. He was very disappointed to be dropped down the order and he deserves his chance at six. I'm happy to bat anywhere for England."

Brendon McCullum is a bit of a hero of mine the way he's been playing. The new ball around the corner is very important for us to get some wickets now.

Looking forward to Saturday, when the England bowling attack may face visiting captain Brendon McCullum in full flight with the bat, Moeen added: "Brendon McCullum is a bit of a hero of mine the way he's been playing. The new ball around the corner is very important for us to get some wickets now."
