Joe Root will make his return to one-day cricket on England's tour of India and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025, but Ben Stokes has been ruled out through injury.

Brendan McCullum's first squads as England white-ball coach have been named ahead of next month's tour of India - which includes three ODIs, five IT20s - and the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in February and March.

Yorkshire batter Root, who has not played ODI cricket since the World Cup in November 2023, returns in an ODI-only capacity.

England Test captain Stokes was not considered for selection as he continues his recovery from the hamstring injury he sustained against New Zealand earlier this month.

After impressing with bat and ball in England's Test series victory in New Zealand, Warwickshire's Jacob Bethell has been named in both squads.

Leicestershire leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed joins the IT20 squad but there was no room for Sam Curran or Reece Topley in either 15-man squad named by McCullum for his first tour and tournament in charge of England's white-ball sides.

England's touring party departs for India on January 17 ahead of the first IT20 in Kolkata on January 22.
