South Africa's Dean Elgar enjoyed a lucky escape against Pakistan with TV umpire Joel Wilson deciding Azhar Ali's catch had not been taken cleanly.

Proteas opener Elgar snicked seamer Shaheen Afridi behind on day three of the first Test at Centurion, with Azhar wheeling away as on-field umpires Sundaram Ravi and Bruce Oxenford gave a soft signal of out.

However, Wilson overturned that call after studying the video evidence available, believing that Azhar has failed to get his fingers, which were wrapped in tape, under the ball in time.

A huge roar emanated from the Centurion crowd when Wilson's decision was revealed on the big screen, while Pakistan's players looked absolutely dumbfounded at Elgar's reprieve.

Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur's frustrated reaction to the call - the ICC said he "showed dissent" towards Wilson before "storming out" of the TV umpire's room - saw him given one demerit point.

An ICC statement read: "Arthur, after TV umpire Joel Wilson had decided in favour of Dean Elgar, entered the TV umpire's room and showed dissent at Mr Wilson's decision by first questioning him and then storming out of the room.

"After the match, the Pakistan coach admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee David Boon. As such, there was no need for a formal hearing."

Speaking on the live commentary, Michael Holding said: "I'm convinced he was out. I think the third umpire made a mistake. The protocol says you have got to be 100 percent sure the decision was wrong to change it."

Elgar was on four at the time and went on to score 50 as South Africa reached their victory target of 149 to win by six wickets - Hashim Amla top-scoring with an unbeaten 63 in the Proteas' second innings.
