Jonny Bairstow says the battle for places will boost England's chances against Australia in the Ashes this winter

England may have a relatively inexperienced squad in Australia for the forthcoming Ashes series, but Jonny Bairstow is expecting the new players to make a lasting impression on the pitch.

Bairstow is confident Mark Stoneman, Dawid Malan and Jake Ball will be pushing for a place in the starting XI for the opening Test in Brisbane on November 23.

He told Sky Sports News: "We want people to be coming in and pushing for places in the side for that first Test and if they do that then that will bring out the best in the rest of squad.

"We've seen what people pushing for starting places has done to the one day side and the skill levels have gone in a positive direction because of that.

"It's a chance to learn about poeple you will not have spent such a long time with before.

"So the guys will come in yes with a bit of excitement and a touch of nerves, but also full of enthusiasm and that is going to be what we need.

"You always want to go out there and express yourself whether it is a one-day game for Yorkshire or a T20 or Test match for England.

"The Ashes is talked about wherever cricket is played not just in England and Australia but all around the world. The eyes of the world will be on you and it's a big series, no question."
