Sam Billings admits England are the underdogs for their upcoming Test series against India, but believes Alastair Cook's side can cause a shock.

Sam Billings says it is vital England adapt to the spin-friendly Indian pitches if they are to enjoy a successful tour of the country.

England will bid to shrug off the relative disappointment of their drawn series with Bangladesh when the five-Test series begins in Rajkot on November 9.

A feature of the two-game series in Bangladesh was that the home side's spinners excelled whereas their English counterparts were expensive.

And Billings feels an ability to quickly adapt to what are traditionally turning wickets on the subcontinent will be a crucial factor in England's preparations over the next week.

"No doubt, they're a seriously good side and they've got lots of superstars but I think if any side can beat them at the moment then it's us," he told Sky Sports News HQ.

"The strength in depth in English cricket that we currently have is great to see, in Test matches and in white-ball cricket as well.

"We have to practice playing spin, we have to be getting out there and get used to the pitches.

"I spent three months in India last year with the IPL and the World Cup and it's all about getting the rhythm of those pitches and getting adjusted to it because it's so different to what we're used to playing on at home."
