Alastair Cook survived a couple of early scares before dragging onto his stumps and becoming Mohammad Amir’s first Test victim as England struggled to capitalise on day two.

Chris Woakes (6-70) completed a first Test five-for earlier in the day as England bowled Pakistan out for 339 after the tourists resumed on 282-6. Misbah-ul-Haq (114) could only add four runs to his overnight score of 110, with Amir striking three fours in his score of 12 from 10 balls.

Alex Hales (8) edged Rahat Ali to Azhar Ali at slip in just the second over of the England innings before Cook was dropped twice off the bowling of Amir, on 22 and 55.

The England skipper shared a second-wicket stand of 110 with Joe Root (48), who looked well-set until he top-edged a slog-sweep off Yasir Shah having made 48.

The spinner claimed his second scalp when James Vince (16) played back to a leg-spin delivery that didn't turn and was lbw, then struck again by removing Gary Ballance - batting at five on his return to the side - for just six.

Cook (81) looked well on the way to making a century before Amir drew an inside edge from the England captain which shattered the stumps. That was followed by Shah removing Jonny Bairstow (29) and Moeen Ali (23) as he became the first leg spinner to take five Test wickets in an innings at Lord's for 20 years.

England ended the day 253-7 with Woakes (31 not out) and Broad (11 not out) returning to the crease in the morning.
