England win Investec Test series with a game to play
Tuesday 31 May 2016 12:20, UK
Nick Compton finished with successive boundaries as England sealed a nine-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the second Investec Test at Durham.
Having finally ended Sri Lanka's stubborn resistance in the afternoon session, bowling them out for 475, Alastair Cook became the first Englishman to score 10,000 Test runs when he hit Nuwan Pradeep for four in the second over of England's second innings.
Cook (47 not out) and Compton (22 not out) then saw England to a series-clinching victory after Alex Hales was bowled for 11.
Earlier, the tourists progressed to 403-6 at lunch after starting the day on 309-5, Dinesh Chandimal moving to his sixth century before the interval.
James Anderson took England's only wicket of the morning, having Milinda Siriwardana (35) caught at gully by Hales early on.
Chandimal (126) and Rangana Herath pushed on and ensured England would have to bat again to seal the win.
But Sri Lanka's resistance was broken after lunch as Anderson claimed a five-wicket haul (5-58) by removing Herath (61) and Shaminda Eranga (1).
Stuart Broad (1-71) and Chris Woakes (2-103) then wrapped up the innings.
