Michael Atherton is joined by Mahela Jayawardena in The Zone to give his slip catching tips

Mahela Jayawardena may have retired from Test cricket - but he's lost none of his catching ability!

The Sri Lanka legend, whose total of 205 Test catches is only bettered by Rahul Dravid (210), proved that when he stepped into The Zone during the second Investec Test at Emirates Riverside.

Jayawardena focussed on slip fielding, explaining how best to pouch the ball in that position, whether you are playing in the subcontinent or on bouncier tracks in Australia.

The Sky Sports pundit revealed why keeping your legs wide apart boosts your movement and allows you to catch balls lower down, a key trait on slower Asian wickets.

Jayawardena also detailed why fielders narrow their stance in Australia and how fielding with 'cupped' hands helps you cling on to stinging deliveries.

Watch Mahela's masterclass in the video above, in which he also discusses why he admired the catching technique of Mark Waugh, a man with 181 Test catches to his name.
