Nick Blackwell is reportedly in a "stable" condition in hospital after undergoing a "procedure" following a sparring session earlier this week.

Blackwell was forced to retire from boxing just eight months ago after suffering a bleed on the skull during a stoppage defeat to Chris Eubank Jr.

The 26-year-old former middleweight spent a week in a coma after collapsing in the ring following the 10th round of their British title fight at Wembley Arena on March 26.

After being released from hospital Blackwell admitted he was "very lucky" to escape serious injury and ruled out a return to the ring but it appears the lure of boxing enticed him back.

Robert Smith, general secretary of the BBBofC, told The Sun: "I understand he was sparring, fell ill, was taken to hospital and then underwent a procedure.

"I don't know exactly what the procedure was, other than the fact they tried to relieve pressure on the brain and he's now in a stable condition. That's all I know."

Smith added that he was disappointed that Blackwell, who was planning to open his own gym and received his trainer's licence last month, had put his health in danger.

He added: "I'm sickened by it. It's a very tough sport and the doctors here did a wonderful job to save his life. The doctors at hospital saved his life and kept him going.

"He made remarkable recovery and for somebody to go and do what he's done, for what I thought was a very sensible young man, is just beyond belief."
