Frankie Gavin must change his lifestyle and reinvent himself in a lighter weight division, advises Matthew Macklin.
Gavin emerged with credit despite losing a wild shoot-out against Sam Eggington on Saturday, having previously attracted criticism for failing to make the welterweight limit earlier in the week.
Sky Sports' Macklin believes that Gavin, who infamously withdrew from the 2008 Olympics due to weight issues, must rededicate himself if he wants to relaunch a career that saw him unsuccessfully challenge IBF champion Kell Brook earlier this year.
Macklin told Sky Sports: "I don't know where Frankie Gavin goes from here - does he retire, does he look for a rematch? I don't think he does retire, on the back of that performance.
"He needs to have an honest conversation with himself. How much does he want it? Does he want to continue in this sport or does he retire? I don't see him being successful as a welterweight - he can mix it, but he's coming off second best.
"He doesn't live the life outside the ring - when he goes home he'll have a burger or a curry. He's got to learn to diet. If he carries on boxing, he has to go down to light-welterweight."
The first nine professional bouts of Gavin's career came at light-welterweight, but he has competed at the heavier limit of welterweight since 2011.
