Kal Yafai is confident his younger brother Galal will win a medal in Rio and is not ruling out him bringing gold back to Birmingham.

The professional world-title contender expects his 23-year-old sibling to be part of a successful Great Britain boxing team at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

Light-flyweight Galal will be one of the first amateurs in action on Saturday when he takes on Cameroon's Fotsala Simplice in the 49kg class, following Friday night's opening ceremony.

Kal and brother Gamal, the Commonwealth super-bantamweight champion, are planning to fly out to Rio if Galal wins his first two bouts and reaches the quarter-final stage.

"I have already been realistic with him and not said 'you are going to win a gold medal' because that's a big ask and I know how tough it is, but I do know he is capable of medalling," said Kal.

"And once he's in there, he can easily go on and win gold. He is a more than capable kid and he's very strong. He is always learning and improving and gets better fight-by-fight."

Kal was part of the GB team in Beijing in the 2008 Games that saw James DeGale win gold and David Price and Tony Jeffries claim bronze.

Kal, the oldest of five Yafai brothers - Gamal (25), Galal (23), Adam (19) and Mikyle (6) - was knocked out of the flyweight round-of-16 by Cuba's Andry Laffita.

Even though Lattifa went on to win silver, Kal, who is now on the verge of fighting for a super-flyweight world title, admits he made mistakes outside the ring and is trying to ensure his younger brother does not do the same.

"He knows what he's up against but he just has to take each fight as it comes, soak it all up, make sure he gets the right rest and he is listening to the coaches but, most importantly, enjoy it," Kal added. "He can show everyone how capable he is and I just told him once he's in there for the Olympics, he can't afford to be so intense and want it so badly, because that is when you underperform.

Team GB's boxing team are expected to deliver several medals at the Rio Olympics which start next weekend

"I am 100 per cent sure that was one of the mistakes I made. I got a little bit distracted in the Olympic Village. There is so much to go and see or do, like free arcades, free food everywhere, there is just so much going on.

"My inexperience caught up with me and I know Yalal is inexperienced as well but when I was walking in for my fights, I'd never boxed anywhere like that before, so the occasion got to me and I kind of froze."

Galal has only had 29 amateur fights but won the qualifying gold in Turkey to secure his place at Rio and has been part of the successful British Lionhearts team in this year's World Boxing Series.

And with the big-stage experience behind him, the light-flyweight will have the sort of support British boxers are now accustomed to, both in Birmingham and in Rio.

Gamal Yafai won his professional Commonwealth title earlier this year

"As soon as he wins that second fight, me and Gamal are straight out there," said Kal.

"We are going to do our little tour but I'm also going to have to babysit him too! I am going to have to keep my eyes on both my little brothers when I'm out there

"But before that the whole family and all the local support are going to be sat there watching it. All of us.

"We had to get Gamal's first Commonwealth defence and 12-rounder out the way, so now we will all be glued to the TV on Saturday. From here on in, all eyes are on Galal."
