Lennox Lewis fears Kell Brook's decision to move up two weight divisions to fight Gennady Golovkin could backfire.
IBF world welterweight champion Brook is set to fight unified middleweight champion Golovkin on September 10, live on Sky Sports Box Office.
While Brook insists he is a "different animal" at the new weight class, Lewis thinks it could prove to have been a mistake to change.
"I don't think he should go up two weight classes," Lewis told Sky Sports News HQ. "Kell Brook is a great fighter and there's certain fighters in the world that are able to do it.
"He's the king of his weight class down there. Now he has to move up two weight classes to beat the king of his (Golovkin's) weight class.
"This is the kind of fight where when it's over you say 'should I have really done that?'
"He feels confident, he believes that he can do it so let's see what happens."
Brook (36-0-25KO) will take on WBA 'Super', WBC and IBF king Golovkin (35-0-KO32) at The O2 after talks over the Kazakh facing Chris Eubank Jr broke down.
Lewis is concerned that Brook has not allowed himself enough time to match the physicality of one of the sport's best pound-for-pound fighters.
"He needs more strength, I don't know if you can get more strength in two months or whatever time he's doing it," he said.
IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua could fight WBC heavyweight title holder Deontay Wilder this year, according to US TV network Showtime, and Lewis believes it is the perfect time for the two to face off.
"They're basically on the same pedestal but they're far apart in a sense, and the only thing keeping them far apart is the ocean," said Lewis.
"I like Anthony's power but I like the fact he's knocking everybody out. He's looking big, I think he's in better shape and I think he's technically better.
"Deontay may have more power in his right hand but they're pretty close, you can't really say one way or the other."
