A middleweight world title fight between Gennady Golovkin and Chris Eubank Jr is close to being agreed according to promoter Eddie Hearn

Chris Eubank Jr's clash against the "most dangerous fighter on the planet", Gennady Golovkin, will be made this week, according to Eddie Hearn.

Eubank Jr (23-1 KO18) moved a step closer to a showdown with the Kazakhstani knockout specialist by defending his British middleweight title with a commanding fourth round stoppage of Tom Doran at the O2 Arena on Saturday night.

In the aftermath of that victory, Eubank Jr called out the WBA Super, WBC and IBF world champion and has since enjoyed some verbal sparring with his potential opponent over social media

Golovkin (35-0-KO32) has never tasted defeat in the professional ranks and has become one of the sport's most feared fighters, producing a long list of devastating knockout victories.

But Eubank Jr is undeterred by the 34-year-old's record and Hearn expects a deal to be reached this week for the fighters to meet in the ring, potentially at The O2 Arena.

"This is a fight that many people struggle to get their heads around, " Hearn, Eubank Jr's promoter, told Sky Sports News HQ

The verbal prelude to a potential fight between Chris Eubank Jr and Gennady Golovkin has begun…

"You've got a young, upcoming, world quality operator in Chris Eubank Jr, who is willing and prepared to take on the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world and the most dangerous fighter on the planet, in Gennady Golovkin.

"I am waiting for the Eubanks to turn round and say we're not serious, it's just for a bit of press and PR. They are deadly serious and we took another major step to that fight now, and I believe this fight will be made this week, I really do.

"The danger is that everybody talks about fighting people, you've seen Golovkin was supposed to fight Canelo, Canelo decided to swerve that fight.

"Billy Joe Saunders has been linked, he swerved the Golovkin fight. I don't blame them, no elite fighter wants to fight Golovkin apart from Chris Eubank Jr.

"It will be one of the biggest fights in this country and when was the last time a name like Golovkin came and defended three belts. It's unheard of and they (Eubanks) really believe they can win the fight.

"I know they want the fight and I know Golovkin will take the fight. It will be my job in the next 48-72 hours to get that closed off and produce another huge event."

When asked about a possible venue for the fight, Hearn added: "Wembley is a great option, but once the football season kicks in it becomes difficult, especially now with the new Tottenham situation.

"Wembley, the window of opportunity for us, is really April, May and June. This is more suited to an O2 Arena, it is such a wonderful arena and we had another great event there at the weekend.

"Fingers crossed, as to get this over the line would be a major boost in the armoury of British boxing."
