Andy Townend stopped Craig Poxton in one and Dave Allen saw off Jason Gavern antics

Andy Townend bt Craig Poxon

Andy Townend lived up to nickname 'The KO Kid' by blowing Craig Poxon away inside the first round.

The English super-featherweight champion put the challenger down three times in clinical and crushing fashion.

The first came from a lovely right uppercut that left Poxton on the floor and the credit he earned for getting up was doubled when he rose from another left-right combination soon after.

Andy Townend lived up to his name when he floored Craig Poxton three times on the way to a first round stoppage

It was clearly a matter of when and not if Townend (16-3-KO11) would finish it but within seconds another uppercut, this time with the right, left Poxton down again and the referee with no alternative but to step in.

"I've been in camp since Boxing Day. I really enjoyed it tonight," he told Sky Sports.

"It was different to Leeds. I've calmed down and experienced it all. It was a nice one that. I've always punched hard but I'm punching harder now. British and Commonwealth - I want to move on now."

Doncaster heavyweight David Allen stopped Jason Gavern after four rounds and says he would welcome a fight against David Price

David Allen had to deal with all sorts of antics to see off the mischievous and - at times - entertaining Jason Gavern.

The Yorkshire heavyweight was supposed to be fighting friend Richard Powers in a British title eliminator before illness intervened, but it was still an important learning process for the 'White Rhino'.

This time though it was how to deal with a man who wasn't there to fight. Gavern started off with his familiar 'Woohoo!' and goading the crowd but soon after he was in trouble with referee Howard Foster for holding.

Allen tried his best to keep the American in his place with the jab but with Gavern ducking down at every opportunity, he did well to land a proper shot.

A double left and then a big right suggested it could be over soon, but Allen actually had to pick himself off the canvas - after Gavern had grappled him round the thighs and flipped him off the floor.

A point was deducted and at the end of the third, even Gavern's corner had enough, throwing in the towel after the 'woos' had turned into 'boos'.

Allen moved to 9-0-1-KO6 and immediately forgot about Gavern, looked beyond Towers and set his sights on David Price.

"I need someone to stand in front of me and fight," he told Sky Sports. "David Price is looking for a comeback fight. I'll take him out. He's got no chin. Let's do it next."

Leigh Wood produced a spectacular knockout on the undercard of Kell Brook v Kevin Bizier

The finest finish before Townend's came from Leigh Wood, who claimed the British Midlands Area featherweight title in fantastic fashion

'Leigh-thal' lived up to his nickname, stopping Lee Glover in the second round, landing a big overhead left to have him down and although he made it back up, the gumshield was gone and so were his chances of making it to the end of the round.

Another local lad, Lee Appleyard moved to 7-1-KO3 as the Rotherham super-featherweight stopped Josh Bailey in the third round, while the domestic 130lbs scene also saw Jordan Gill progressing; the 'The Thriller' moving to 16-0-KO3 by outclassing Chris Adaway.

Dublin's Dean Byrne ended his five-fight losing streak, snatching a 58-57 win over Jamie Robinson before Adam Etches exorcised some demons as he won on his return to the Sheffield Arena, almost a year to the day he was stunned by Sergey Khomitsky.

The 25-year-old Wincobank boxer was in control from the start and in the third, a series of hooks landed hard and forced the referee to step in and spare the game Zoltan Sera further damage.
