WBA heavyweight champion Lucas Browne is seeking legal advice after a report claimed he had failed a drugs test.

The Australian defeated the WBA's regular champion Ruslan Chagaev in Chechnya last month, but ESPN reported on Monday that he had tested positive for clenbuterol in a post-fight doping test.

Browne became the first Australian heavyweight to win a world title and is set to defend his belt against Fres Oquendo despite talk of a potential clash with Britain's David Haye.

Testing was undertaken by the Las Vegas-based Voluntary Anti-Doping Association, and an email from their president Margaret Goodman was published by ESPN.

"This letter is to advise you that the 'A' sample urine specimen number 2998060 collected from Lucas Browne ... has been analyzed for anabolic agents, diuretics, beta-2 agonists and stimulants," Goodman wrote.

But Browne said he could not comprehend the news, as he wrote on Twitter: "I don't understand today's news, and I'm seeking legal advice."

A statement on the WBA's official website read: "The WBA and WBA Championships Committee hope this is a misunderstanding that can be resolved and have agreed to wait until an analysis of the 'B' sample is complete before rendering a decision regarding the situation."
