Callum Smith delighted to have beaten Rocky Fielding inside a round

Callum Smith is hoping for a world title shot in 2016 after stopping Rocky Fielding inside a round in Liverpool.

The 25-year-old super-middleweight joined his three boxing brothers by becoming a British champion and believes he can go on to succeed at the very top of the sport.

Smith told Sky Sports: "Unbelievable. I felt excited while it last lasted. Credit to Rocky Fielding. He came out and got in to a shoot-out. It was a good fight while it lasted.

"It looks on paper like a one-round blowout but I'd have been pleased to get the win in any round. He's a good fighter and I want to give him credit.

I said in the build-up and it came across as arrogant that I was the better fighter but I showed it tonight. I said that as soon as one shot landed I thought it'd catch fire.

"I said in the build-up and it came across as arrogant that I was the better fighter but I showed it tonight. I said that as soon as one shot landed I thought it'd catch fire but I didn't think I'd take him out in the first round. I thought it'd be over in the first four.

"I'd be a liar if I said that I thought I'd take him out in one round. He's a good fighter and I'm delighted to be British champion. For the four of us to get it is something we're very proud of.

"When I landed, I sort of jumped on him and it gave him a chance to get back in to the fight. I'm still only young and I'm still learning. I'm doing everything right at the minute and I think 2016 is the year I can become a world champion."

Promoter Eddie Hearn added: "I felt because these guys hadn't been on this kind of stage before that they might have nerves but they just went at it. This guy has freakish power but congratulations to both fighters for putting their unbeaten record on the line.

"Four sons as British champions. This will never be done again and it'll be something that will be remembered. I believe Callum Smith will go on and win world championships. We'll be pushing at the WBC convention for him to become mandatory challenger to Badou Jack.

"We've got Martin Murray challenging, James DeGale as the IBF champion and George Groves coming back, which is a fight we've always wanted as well. This is big times for Callum Smith in the world division."
