Pablo Carreno Busta reached his maiden Grand Slam semi-final as the Spanish 12th seed dispatched Argentina's Diego Schwartzman in straight sets at the US Open.
Carreno Busta, the first player to face four qualifiers in any Grand Slam, advanced to last four with a straight-forward 6-4 6-4 6-2 victory over the diminutive Schwartzman.
Schartzman, at 5ft 7in, was the shortest Grand Slam quarter-finalist since Peruvian Jaime Yzaga at the 1994 US Open, and was bidding to become the shortest in a major semifinal since 5ft 6in Harold Solomon at the 1980 French Open, but a groin problem prevented him from extending Carreno Busta at any stage of the match.
"It's incredible," Carreno Busta said. "It's something that I always dreamed of but never think I can arrive here.
"It's very exciting to be in the semi-finals. It was a very good match today. I tried to be focused all the time, Diego is a fighter. You need to be aggressive all the time and try to dominate the points."
The Spaniard, who has yet to drop a set at Flushing Meadows, saved eight of the 10 break points he faced while taking six of eight chances on Schwartzman's serve.
He will next meet South African 28th seed Kevin Anderson who beat 17th-seeded American Sam Querrey in the night match.
